For foreigners living in Czechia
Expat paperwork in Czechia: what to report, where and by when
Every report and application a foreigner makes about their home and their stay: your address after arriving, moving, extending a visa or permit, a new passport or a baby, leaving. Each with the deadline, the office, the official form and the law it comes from.
In short: most of it goes to the Interior Ministry’s offices for foreigners (OAMP). The foreign police take your first address report after arriving. None of it can be done online yet: you go to the office, post the form, send it from a data box (datová schránka) or e-mail it with a recognised electronic signature.
Report your address after arriving
The foreign police need to know where you live soon after you enter Czechia. A hotel or other accommodation that reports its guests reports you itself.
From outside the EU
Deadline: 3 working days
Within 3 working days of entering, at the foreign police department for where you live, on the registration form (přihlašovací tiskopis). Not needed if your accommodation reported you.
EU citizens and their family
Deadline: 30 days
If you’ll stay longer than 30 days: within 30 days of entering, at the foreign police, on the same form.
Report a new address
Moving within Czechia? Who you tell, and by when, depends on your residence. Your lease or the owner’s confirmation proves the new address.
Long-term visa or residence permit
Deadline: 30 days
Moving for longer than 30 days: within 30 days of the move, to the Interior Ministry, on the Oznámení změn form. Take it to an office, post it, send it from a data box or e-mail it with a recognised electronic signature.
Permanent residence
Report a move to the Interior Ministry on the same form; its page says when, and what to bring.
EU citizens and their family
Deadline: 30 working days
With a registration certificate, permanent residence or a residence card, moving for longer than 180 days: within 30 working days, to the Interior Ministry, on the same form. If you only registered with the foreign police, tell the police for your new address instead.
Temporary protection
Deadline: 3 working days
Moving for longer than 15 days: within 3 working days, to the Interior Ministry, with a proof of accommodation, on the temporary-protection form (Czech and Ukrainian). Changing the address in your online profile doesn’t count, and a proof that doesn’t meet the rules is ignored.
Prove where you live
Applications and address reports ask for a proof of accommodation: your lease, your title to the flat, or the owner’s confirmation with an officially verified signature.
Our proof-of-accommodation page fills in the owner’s confirmation in Czech, with a translation, and says when the signature needs verifying.
Extend your visa or permit
Apply before your visa or permit runs out, but not earlier than the law allows. If something outside your control stopped you applying in time for a residence permit or a visa, apply within 5 working days after it ends and say why.
Long-term residence permit
From 120 days before
From 120 days before it expires until the day it does, to the Interior Ministry; an employee card or EU Blue Card too. While an application made in time is decided, your stay stays legal.
Long-term visa
From 90 days before
From 90 days before it expires until the day it does, on the same form as the visa application.
Permanent residence
From 90 days before
Renew your permanent residence card from 90 days before it expires until the day it does.
A new passport, name or marital status
A change to what’s on your residence document is reported to the office that issued it.
From outside the EU
Deadline: 3 working days
Within 3 working days of the change, on the Oznámení změn form.
EU citizens and their family
Deadline: 15 working days
Within 15 working days of the change, on the same form.
Temporary protection
Report it to the Interior Ministry on the temporary-protection form.
A lost or stolen card or passport
Report it quickly: the deadline is short.
Deadline: 3 working days
A lost, stolen or damaged residence document: within 3 working days, to the office that issued it (an embassy if it happened abroad). A lost or stolen passport: to the police straight away.
A baby born in Czechia
A baby born to foreign parents needs a residence of their own.
From outside the EU
Deadline: 60 days
Within 60 days of the birth, apply in person at an Interior Ministry office: for the same kind of visa as yours, or a long-term residence permit (permanent residence if you have it). Not needed if the baby leaves Czechia within that time.
EU citizens and their family
A baby who is an EU citizen needs no permit. The ministry’s page covers a baby who isn’t.
Documents for EU citizens and their family
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens need no permit to live here; their family from outside the EU do.
EU citizens
A registration certificate (osvědčení o registraci) is optional for a stay longer than 3 months. You apply to the Interior Ministry with a proof of accommodation.
Family from outside the EU
Deadline: 3 months
A family member from outside the EU applies to the Interior Ministry for temporary residence within 3 months of entering, if they’ll stay longer than that.
Leaving Czechia for good
There’s no departure form to file, but your residence document goes back.
Deadline: 3 days before you leave
Hand back your residence document (a visa excepted) at least 3 days before your stay ends, to the office that issued it, in person or by registered post. You can also ask for the permit to be cancelled.

Where to go
The offices keep their own lists up to date, so we link them rather than copy addresses.
The Interior Ministry’s offices for foreigners (OAMP)
Permits, long-term visas and most reports of a change go to the Department for Asylum and Migration Policy (Odbor azylové a migrační politiky, OAMP), with offices in every region. Book an appointment online.
Without going in
The ministry also takes forms by post, from a data box (datová schránka) or by e-mail with a recognised electronic signature, or through someone you give a power of attorney.
The foreign police
Your first address report after arriving goes to the foreign police department for where you live. Each region’s department, with its hours, is on the police’s list.
Temporary protection
Holders of temporary protection can also report changes at a regional assistance centre for Ukraine (KACPU).
Questions
Expat paperwork, answered
What is OAMP?
The Interior Ministry’s Department for Asylum and Migration Policy (Odbor azylové a migrační politiky). Its offices handle residence permits, long-term visas and most reports of a change, such as a new address.
What does the foreign police do, and where is it in Prague?
The foreign police (cizinecká policie) take your first address report after arriving, and a move by an EU citizen who registered only with them; permits and other changes are the Interior Ministry’s. The police list each region’s department, Prague’s included, with its address and hours.
Can I report a change of address online?
Not yet. Instead of going to an office you can post the form, send it from a data box (datová schránka) or e-mail it with a recognised electronic signature. Under temporary protection, changing the address in your online profile doesn’t count.
Do I report a new address to the foreign police or the Interior Ministry?
On a long-term visa or residence permit, to the Interior Ministry, within 30 days. The foreign police only take your first report after arriving, and a move by an EU citizen who registered only with them.
How long do I have to report a new address?
30 days on a long-term visa or residence permit; 30 working days for an EU citizen with a registration certificate, permanent residence or a residence card; 3 working days under temporary protection. A short move doesn’t count: see the rules above for each.
Which form do I use?
Oznámení změn for most changes, Ohlášení změn under temporary protection, and the registration form (přihlašovací tiskopis) for your first report to the foreign police. All are linked on this page, straight from the official sites.
When can I apply to extend my residence permit?
From 120 days before it expires until the day it does. While an application made in time is decided, your stay stays legal.
