Read our guide to Prague’s neighbourhoods

How the finder works

Every figure comes from the flats on offer today and from public maps. The finder ranks places, never the people who live there.

The areas

Prague’s neighbourhoods (its cadastral areas), and the outer city parts that have none of their own: every part of the city, counted once.

The ranking

  • An area is on the list when at least one flat of the layout asks your budget or less today, and, with a place picked, when the trip from it to where the area’s homes are takes no longer than your minutes.
  • For each thing you pick, the areas on the list are placed from worst to best on one fact. The fit is the average of those places, with the flats in budget always counting as one of them. The trip only decides which areas are on the list.
  • “Why it’s here” names the facts an area is in the top quarter for; “Worth knowing”, the ones you picked that it’s in the bottom quarter for.

The facts

  • Flats: the asking rents or prices of the flats on offer today, by layout. Asking figures, not what flats let or sold for.
  • Transit and amenity scores: the median of the homes on the market in the area, as every listing shows them.
  • Schools and parks: the share of those homes with a school within 500 m, or a park of a hectare or more within 300 m (the WHO’s guidance for green space).
  • Quiet: the share of those homes where night noise from roads, trams and trains reaches 55 dB, on Prague’s strategic noise map.
  • Green space: how much of the area’s land is park or forest, on Prague’s maps.
  • Nightlife: the bars and pubs inside the area, from OpenStreetMap, counted against its size.

What it leaves out

  • Who lives there. We don’t score neighbours, crime or “good areas”: walk the street at night and ask the locals.
  • Flood zones and air quality: each area’s page and each listing show them.
  • The building and the flat itself: the noise inside depends on the windows and which side the bedroom faces.

Questions

Questions about choosing where to live in Prague

What is the best area of Prague to live in?

The one that fits your budget, your trip and how you live. Quiet and green suits families; transit and bars suit people new to the city. The finder ranks the areas for what you pick and says why each one is there.

Where do expats live in Prague?

There’s no one expat area. People new to Prague often look first at central areas with good transit and plenty of flats to rent, such as Vinohrady, Karlín or Holešovice; families often look further out, where it’s greener and schools are close. Pick what matters to you and compare them.

Where is it cheapest to rent in Prague?

Usually in the outer city parts and the big housing estates, further from the centre. Set your budget and layout: the finder shows which areas have flats at that price today, and the cheapest asking rent where nothing fits yet.

How is the trip worked out?

By public transport and on foot, leaving at 8:00 on a weekday, on the PID timetables. It’s measured from the place you pick to the middle of the area’s homes on offer, so a home at the area’s edge may be a few minutes nearer or further.

How fresh are the figures?

The flats and their asking prices are updated every day; the scores, schools and parks follow the homes on the market, and the noise and green maps come from the city.
