Before you call a locksmith
A price first named at the door is hard to argue with when you're locked out. Settle these on the phone:
- Ask the call-out fee and the full price of opening your door and lock before anyone comes, and whether nights or weekends cost more.
- If the price at the door is higher than you were told, you can say no before the work starts. You may still owe a call-out fee you agreed to.
- Ask for a receipt with the firm's name, its IČO, the date and the price. A firm has to give you one when you ask.
- In a rented flat, agree a new lock with your landlord, and keep the old cylinder to put back when you move out.
Who's listed
A firm is listed only when all of these hold. Bytky lists firms; it doesn't rate or vouch for them.
- It's registered and active in ARES, the business register, and its IČO is on its own website.
- It holds the craft trade licence for locksmithing (zámečnictví), active in the trade register. It's a trade that needs a qualification.
- It's easy to contact: a website, a phone number, and an email or a quote form.
- It has strong public reviews: one source with at least 20 reviews, averaging at least 90% on Firmy.cz or 4.5 of 5 on Google or Trustpilot.
- It does the work itself, with its own locksmiths in Prague. Call centres and sites that pass your call on to whoever is free aren't listed.
How the list is ordered
Firms with the most public reviews come first. Nobody pays to be listed or to move up. Advertising, when it comes, is labelled and sits beside the list, never in it.

Questions
Choosing a locksmith in Prague
What does opening a locked door cost, and how do I avoid being overcharged?
Prices differ a lot between firms, so ask on the phone before anyone comes: the call-out fee, the price of opening your kind of door and lock, and any surcharge at night or at weekends. Choose a firm that publishes its prices, and agree the full price before the work starts. If the price at the door is higher than you were told, you can say no before they start. Ask for a receipt: a firm has to give you one when you ask, with its name, its IČO, the date and the price (Consumer Protection Act, §16).
May I change the lock in a rented flat?
Agree it with your landlord first, in writing: the Civil Code lets a tenant make changes to a flat only with the landlord's consent (§2263). Keep the original cylinder and its keys, and put it back when you move out unless your landlord wants the new one. Your landlord can never change the locks to keep you out.
Does a locksmith need a licence?
Yes. Locksmithing (zámečnictví) is a craft trade under the Trade Licensing Act, so a locksmith needs a trade licence for it, and getting one takes a qualification or years of practice in the trade. Every locksmith on this list holds one, and each firm's page links to its entry in ARES.
Which firms speak English or Ukrainian?
Pick the language above the list. A language is listed only when the firm's own website has a version in it, says the firm serves customers in it or translates it, or the official register the firm is in lists it.
Can a firm pay to be listed or to move up?
No. Firms are listed when they meet the bar and ordered by how many public reviews they have. Advertising, when it comes, is labelled and sits beside the list, never in it.
How does a firm get listed or change its page?
Email partners@bytky.com from an address on the firm's website. We list firms that meet the bar, and correct or remove a page within two working days.
