Guides

Read in this order if you’re new to it.

  1. Visas and permitsEU citizens can simply move here. Everyone else staying longer than 90 days needs a long-term visa or residence permit for one purpose, such as a job, studies or family, applied for in person and usually at a Czech embassy before you travel. In English
  2. Register your addressIf you're not an EU citizen, you tell the foreign police where you live within three working days of arriving, unless a hotel or landlord had you sign the form. EU citizens staying longer than 30 days have 30 days.In English
  3. Temporary protectionTemporary protection lets people who fled the war in Ukraine live, work and study in Czechia. It runs a year at a time, now to 31 March 2027, and you keep it only by registering each year and reporting every move.In English
  4. Permanent residenceAfter five years' continuous stay, most foreigners can apply for permanent residence: a permit with no end date and free access to work. You need Czech at level A2 and a regular income (not EU citizens and their families), and a place to live.In English
  5. CitizenshipMost foreigners can apply after five years of permanent residence, or three for EU citizens. You need Czech at level B1, a pass in a test on Czech society and history, a clean record and proof of your income. Czech law hasn't asked new citizens to give up their old citizenship since 2014.In English
