Your move

Where are you moving from?
The new home is

Well before the move

  1. Thu 24 SeptAlready past: do it as soon as you can.

Give notice on your old flat

A lease with no end date ends 3 months after the first day of the month after your landlord receives your notice. A lease with an end date simply ends on it. The end-of-lease tool works out your dates and prints the notice in Czech.

    Deadline in law

    • By post, for a lease with no end date to end with the moving month: post it by 24 September 2026.Passed
    • Handed over in person: by 30 September 2026.Passed

8 weeks before

  1. Sat 31 Oct

    Book a moving firm

Ask two or three firms for a quote, with the date, both addresses, the floors, the lifts and any large items. A firm that moves other people’s things needs a road haulage concession, and it’s liable for damage from the moment it takes your things until it hands them over.

6 weeks before

  1. Sat 14 Nov

Reserve a space for the van

A space on the street needs a permit for special use of the road (zábor) from the district, with the road owner’s consent. Districts can take a month or more to decide, so apply now.

  2. Sat 14 Nov

    Decide what you won’t take

Sell, give away or throw out what won’t come with you. A clearance firm empties a flat and takes the things away, which helps when the move leaves no time for it.

2 to 4 weeks before

  1. Sat 28 Nov

Arrange storage if you need it

If the new home isn’t ready yet or is smaller, store things for the weeks in between. Some moving firms store things too.

  2. Sat 28 Nov

    Ask both buildings about moving

Ask about the house rules for a move: the hours, using the lift, where the van may stand and whether to protect the stairs.

  3. Sat 28 Nov

Sign up for electricity and internet

Sign with an electricity supplier, and for gas if the new home has its own, a few weeks ahead. Order internet now too: a new connection can take weeks.

  4. Sat 5 Dec

    Paint before you move in

An empty flat is quicker to paint. In a rented flat, ask your landlord first: changing the flat needs their consent.

The last week

  1. Sat 19 Dec

    Put up the parking signs

If you have a permit, put up the temporary signs as it says. A week ahead is a sensible margin.

  2. Sat 19 Dec

    Plan the bulky waste

Furniture you don’t take goes to a collection yard or to a district’s large container. Leaving it by the bins or on the street is an offence.

  3. Thu 24 Dec

Clean the old flat and the new one

Hand the old flat back clean, and clean the new one before your things arrive. A rented flat goes back in the state you took it over in, apart from normal wear, which helps get the deposit back.

Moving day

  1. Sat 26 Dec

Hand over and take over, with a record

On both days write each room’s state, the keys and the meter readings into a handover record, with dated photos. The meter readings decide your old and new bills.

After the move

  1. Sun 27 Dec

    Report your new address

Where and by when depends on your status. A Czech citizen reports a permanent address at the district’s registration office; a foreigner reports to the Ministry of the Interior, or to the police.

    Deadline in law

    • Czech citizen: no deadline and no fine.
    • Long-term visa or long-term residence permit: within 30 days: by 25 January 2027.
    • Permanent residence, or an EU citizen with a registration certificate: within 30 working days: by 8 February 2027.
    • Temporary protection: within 3 working days: by 30 December 2026.
  2. Tue 29 Dec

    Tell your health insurer

Your health insurer needs an address where post reaches you. A foreigner reports a new address by a deadline.

    Deadline in law

    • A foreigner: within 30 days: by 25 January 2027.
  3. Tue 29 Dec

Change the address for your car

A car registered in Czechia needs its keeper’s new address in the vehicle register, with a new registration certificate.

    Deadline in law

    • Within 10 working days of the move: by 11 January 2027.
  4. Tue 29 Dec

End the energy contracts at the old flat

Once you’ve moved out, end the old electricity and gas contracts, with the meter readings from the handover record.

  5. Sat 2 Jan

    Get a new ID card

For a Czech citizen who reported a new permanent address: the old card stops being valid, so apply for a new one in time.

    Deadline in law

    • The old card stops being valid 45 days after you report the move: on 9 February 2027, if you report it on moving day.
    • Apply for a new one within 15 days after that: by 24 February 2027.
  6. Mon 25 Jan

    Get your deposit back

Your landlord returns the deposit with interest when the lease ends, less what you owe. The deposit return tool works out what’s owed to the day and fills in a demand in Czech.

How to plan a move in Prague, week by week

Updated 4 minute read

A move in Prague has two kinds of deadline. Some are practical: a moving firm books up weeks ahead, a district takes time to approve a parking space for the van, and a new internet connection can take weeks. Others are set by law: reporting your new address, telling your health insurer, changing the address for your car and, for a Czech citizen, getting a new ID card. The moving plan puts both on a calendar from your moving day, and lets you ask for the help you need in one request.

How to use the plan

  1. Moving day. Pick the day your things move. Every task's date counts from it, so a later day moves the whole plan.
  2. Where from. From abroad, from elsewhere in Czechia, or within Prague. The address deadlines differ by status and by where you come from.
  3. Rented or bought. A rented home adds giving notice on the old flat and getting the deposit back; a bought one adds a talk with a mortgage adviser.
  4. Rooms. How big the new home is, for the firms that quote for the move.

The plan then lists each stretch, from giving notice to the month after, and every task in it with its date. A date already past is marked: do that task as soon as you can.

Reading the deadlines

Under a task the law dates, “Deadline in law” lists whose deadline it is and the day it falls on. Working days leave out weekends and Czech public holidays.

Your address. A foreigner from outside the EU reports where they live within three working days of arriving, unless the accommodation provider reports them.1 Moving within Czechia, a foreigner with a long-term visa or permit reports the new address within 30 days.2 A Czech citizen reports a new permanent address at the registration office, with no deadline.3 The register your address page explains where to go for each status.

Your health insurer. A foreigner tells their health insurer about a new address within 30 days.4 Everyone else gives the insurer an address for post if they don't live at their permanent address.

Your car. A change in a car's registered data, such as its keeper's address, is applied for within ten working days, with the registration certificate.5

An ID card. A Czech citizen's card stops being valid 45 days after a new permanent address is reported, and its holder applies for a new one within 15 days after that.6 The plan counts from a move reported on moving day.

Asking for help

Under the plan, tick the services you'd like: a moving firm is ticked from the start. Tell us about the move if you like, the floors, the lifts and any large items, then leave your name and email once. Each service becomes its own request, and one email asks you to confirm them all. A mortgage adviser only ever gets your contact details, never the facts of your move.

Bytky is choosing a few firms for each service. Nobody gets your details without your say, naming who it is, and a link in the email deletes the requests whenever you like.

What to do next

Our guide to moving house in Prague explains what to agree with a moving firm, how to reserve a space for the van and where bulky waste goes. On both handover days, the handover record writes down each room, the meters and the keys. Leaving a rented flat? End of lease works out the last day to give notice, and the deposit return tool counts what your landlord owes you afterwards. New to Czechia? The moving checklist puts your first weeks in order.

How the plan is worked out

Each task’s day is counted from your moving day. A deadline in law is worked out from the act that sets it, as read on 31 October 2026, with its sections linked under the task.

  • Working days leave out weekends and Czech public holidays.
  • The notice’s days assume a lease with no end date, ending with the month you move.
  • The address deadlines run from moving day; an ID card’s from the day you report the move, taken here as moving day.
  • A request goes to Bytky alone. Nobody gets your details without your say, naming who it is.
